Blackpool Championship Show 23/06/2024

Judge: Mik Flounders

My sincere thanks to the Blackpool & DCS for giving me the honour of judging PMDs and awarding my first set of CCs. The administration and hospitality were excellent. My thanks to my able steward, Robbie, who kept us moving at good pace throughout proceedings. We started at 11am with rain still on the grass and then bright sunshine prevailed before we were half way through. It all made for a thoroughly enjoyable day.

My thanks and appreciation to all the exhibitors for their support, sportsmanship and permitting me to judge their beautiful Pyreneans.

Overall presentation was excellent though some do need to take a little more care of their dogs teeth as tartar was evident for a few. Movement isn’t always great in our breed so I was very pleased to find every exhibit’s hocks stable and movement was generally sound. Good heads and height dominated within this group of dogs. Finally, all double dews were present and one exhibit even had double dews on the forelegs; perfectly acceptable within our breed standard.

Puppy Dog 1/0
1st Chang & Skiba’s Oonelladream Born To Run
. Best Puppy. 11months. All white youngster of good size and adequate bone. Black pigment sets off a pleasing head. Presents well in profile. Little bit loose in front on the move but to be expected at such a young age.

Junior Dog 2/1
1st Wilcock & Wilcock’s Dream Of Valyria Daemon Of Mysticelysium At Penellcy (Imp Pol)
. Best Junior. 16 months. A lot to like about this young lad. Blackest of pigment though lips could be a little tighter. Good masculine head. I love the asymmetry of his head markings which are fully in accord with the breed standard. He is tall with a tight tuck-up. Moves soundly on compact feet.

Limit Dog 3/0
1st Woolf’s Sabre Golden Ticket Du Pyrdanti (IMP FRA)
DCC & BOS. Very handsome young lad just a tad shy of 3 years old. Pale blaireau around the eyes and ears. Dark lips, nose and eye rims combine to finish a good wedge shaped head. In full coat, which was of good length and harsh texture. Balanced in profile. Sound on the move. Very pleased to award him his first CC and wish him more to come.
2nd Thompson’s Madrasleibhe Croaghaunb. Tall lad approx. 4.5 years with pale blaireau markings. Masculine head a little deep in the muzzle. Enjoying his day out.
3rd Blair’s Penellcy Bennington Bear

Open Dog 5/0 This was one of those classes where you wish you had five first prizes to award but sadly dog shows don’t work that way. The range of type was remarkable with all showing a good amount of height and each possessing qualities the breed needs.
1st Roberts & Roberts’ Ir Ch Asgard Hero Odin Of Mysticelysium Mit Flickorna, (IMP POl), CENW. RDCC. Very nearly 6 years old, it’s been a long time since this handsome lad was last seen in England. Very tall, elegant, with a good masculine and correct head. My eye was drawn to him immediately. Tan patches on his side and pleasing in profile. Strong bone, good angulation and strong hocks make this lad a powerhouse. I was very pleased to award RDCC.
2nd I and Y Baverstock’s Kalkasi Just Because JW. Very different in type my first but quality all the same. Dark eyes, lips and dark amber eyes contribute to a pleasing V-shaped head. All white, good width of chest and strong profile. Compact feet. In good coat with even jacket.
3rd Kenyon & Wards Ch Charibere Simply The Sequel At Kaianna JW.

Veteran Dog 1/0
1st Cubello’s Night Owl
, Best Veteran. At 7½ years old this lad is in good form. Well trained and experienced he presents well and never looks out of place. This dog is correctly proportioned which, makes him one of the best movers on the day. All white, tight feet, good angulation, dark pigment, harsh coat.

Puppy Bitch 1/0
1st Cochrane’s Uttara Du Pyrdanti Myatoksci (Imp)
. Only a couple of days shy of 12 months. A little skittish on the day but allowed me to check her teeth and head before progressing. Pale grey blaireau with black lips. Lovely almond eyes makes for a very pretty feminine girl. She’s lighter in bone than most and her coat is a little uneven, I expect due to a summer shedding.

Junior Bitch 2/0 Two very different girls but both with merit.
1st Kenyon & Ward’s Charibere Reason To Dream At Kaianna. 15 months. Showing maturity for her age. Dark grey ears with tight black lips. Feminine yet with just the right amount of bone for her size. Good angulation. In great condition and well presented. Should do well.
2nd Baverstock’s Kalkasi Super Special. Nearly 16 months. Tall, lighter framed than 1st. Less mature in overall appearance but time is on her side. Pleasing head and outline. Moved well.

Yearling Bitch 1 /0

Limit Bitch 1/0
1st Harris’ Febus Hardknot
. 3 years. Very appealing young girl just starting to come into her own. Prettiest of faces etched with light grey Blaireau. Eyes a little round but colour perfect. Good length of leg. Smooth contours and clean outline are finished by an all white even coat.

Open Bitch 4/2 A tale of contrast.
1st Baverstock’s Kalkasi The Eternal Chase JW. BCC and BOB. 5 years. At first glance this girl isn’t flashy but what she is, is fully equipped, of essential working type and that demands closer inspection. She is light blaireau across the eyes and ears with some attractive speckling across her tapering muzzle. Excellent pigment and overall head shape. Strong short neck running into good shoulder set. Level top line and her tuck up is fringed by a skirt at knee level. Coat is even and harsh. Tight feet. Moves soundly. Expertly handled. Today, gave her, her crown. Congratulations to the breed’s latest champion. To round off the day she made the final short list in a large pastoral group
2nd Bowker & Gibson’s Ch Febus Anapeou JW. RBCC. 2½ years. This girl is the archetypal show dog. Profuse coat. Beautifully presented. Expertly handled. Great size showing good length of leg. Moves out strongly and keeps her topline well. Again the light blaireau marking to the side of her head and ears. Excellent angulation. Had no hesitation in calling her back into the ring for RBCC. I see she also took 2nd in the Champion stakes – pastoral breeds.

Veteran Bitch 1/0
1st Cochrane’s Pyroni Colours Of The Wind For Myatoksci (Imp Can)
. 7½ years. A little unwilling today. Well groomed. Strongly made and compact.
